LAS VEGAS-- Chaparral High School is home to the only school boxing club in Nevada and it's a big hit with students.
It's the brain child of teacher Marbella Alfonzo. She gets help from the owners of Barry's Boxing Center, who donate their time and equipment to the students.
"It's reducing some altercations the kids were getting into. It's keeping them busy. Chaparral does have the reputation of being rough, the kids just need some guidance and direction.," said Alfonzo.
The students are insured by U.S.A. Boxing and receive training from former U.S. Amateur Featherweight Champion Augie "Kid Vegas" Sanchez.
Sophomore Sindy Guevara said the boxing club has helped her stay focused in school.
"I like fighting in the ring, not the street. It makes me keep my grades up because I have to keep them up to be in boxing."
The students and Barry's Boxing Center will put their skills on display June 4th at Chaparral Fight Night in the school's main gymnasium. The event gets under way at 4:00 p.m. and costs $10.00.
