The family pet keeps us company and can help children learn the importance of responsibility.
But a new shows that humans can get salmonella poisoning from pet food.
Here are some precautions to take:
Wash your hands when handling the food.
Always clean and disinfect pet bowls, and be extra careful if you wash them in sinks where you put food.
Keep kids under the age of 5 completely away from the pet food.
Experts also recommend keeping pet food out of the kitchen, where it will be easier for salmonella to be transferred from pet food to your food.
